Portland combines small city sophistication with the great outdoors. You can boat and sail in Casco Bay or swim and relax at nearby beaches. The Greater Portland area also offers more than 100 miles of trails for jogging, biking, hiking, cross country skiing and other activities.
Portland was ranked among the top 20 livable small cities for college students in 2010 by the American Institute for Economic Research, and Outside magazine ranked Portland as the East Coast's best place to live for outdoor sporting and overall quality of life. In 2009 Portland was was first on Forbes.com's list of "America's Most Livable Cities" and was named "America's Foodiest Small Town" by Bon Appetit magazine. And the November 2010 issue of GQ Magazine listed Portland as "One of the Coolest Small Cities in America."
In addition in past years, the National Restaurant Association has ranked the city as one of the "50 Cities that Sizzle," the Children's Rights Council has rated Portland the "No. 1 Place to Raise a Child" and the book The Best Small Arts Towns in America has ranked Portland 4th in the nation.
