Why Choose UNE?

There are lots of reasons to choose the University of New England for your graduate studies:

  • Academic Excellence: U.S. News & World Report has recognized UNE as one of the top tier universities in the North that offer “a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs.” The UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for its national leadership in primary care training, geriatrics, rural medicine and family medicine.
  • Sailboat in HarborLocation: The coastal area of southern Maine has a long history as a popular vacation destination. It's a beautiful, livable part of the country, and the people are friendly and welcoming. It's a great environment for graduate study and a wonderful place to bring a family. UNE's Portland Campus is located in suburban Portland. The Greater Portland area is one of Northern New England's most important centers of health care. Portland is also only two hours from Boston.

The Biddeford Campus, in a coastal community of 21,000, has more than 4,000 feet of ocean frontage.
  • Resources: Students at UNE find some of the best resources in the nation for studying the health professions. Facilities include the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, which includes a human gross anatomy lab for cadaveric and fresh tissue study; the Clinical Simulation Program, which uses high-tech human patient simulators and standardized patients for health professions and medical training; and opportunities afforded by the resources and faculty of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Maine's only medical school.

The Marine Science Education and Research Center has a flow-through sea-water system and a Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center.
  • On-Line Resources: Students enrolled in the University's distance learning programs and those who are off-campus on clinical rotations are supported by state-of-the art information technology and on-line library resources, including more than 21,000 online full-text journal titles.
  • Health Care for Today and Tomorrow:  UNE is one of a handful of private universities with a comprehensive health education mission including medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, nursing and an array of allied health professions. UNE's interprofessional education initiatives prepare future healthcare professionals to practice comprehensive and collaborative team-based care.
  • Eye ExamClinical Experience: UNE graduate programs ensure that students have extensive clinical experiences and research opportunities through University partnerships with health care facilities in the Greater Portland area, the New England Region, and around the nation.
  • A Caring Environment: Both of our campuses are warm, friendly places. You'll notice it in the way other students treat you. You'll notice it in the attitude of your professors--inside and out of class. From day one, you'll know that you're among friends.
  • Everybody Knows Your Name: At UNE students get to know their faculty, and faculty know you. Our faculty/student ratio is 1:17. Your classes will be small, friendly and collegial, as well as demanding.
  • So Much to Do: Apart from the recreational facilities, lecture series, cultural programs, and student organizations on each campus, southern Maine has a rich cultural, sporting, entertainment, and outdoors life. Portland has a symphony orchestra, theater companies, art museum, art galleries, opera company, a myriad of restaurants, a quaint Old Port shopping district, and professional hockey and baseball teams; southern Maine also has many miles of walking, hiking and bicycle trails; sailing, boating, fishing, cross-country and alpine skiing, and much more.
