Undergraduate Student Research/Scholarship

The University provides numerous and varied opportunities for undergraduate students to work with faculty to do research and scholarship. Here are profiles of just a few of the many students conducting research and scholarship at the University. Look for more profiles in the coming months. Camille Smalley '08Camille Smalley '08, an English major with a minor in women's studies, spent the fall semester 2006 on research that looks at societal expectations of women during the early twentieth-century and how the state chose to deal with those "bad girls" who didn’t conform. Story.


During summer 2006, four students from the Department of Environmental Studies are working as interns on research and service projects  within the local community. Story.

,  an aquarium and aquaculture major, and Kerra Gearinger '08, a marine biology major, were research assistants aboard an NSF research vessel on a seven-week expedition to the Antarctic. imageAshley Below '05, a marine biology student, spent 24 days aboard a NSF research vessel on an expedition to the Antarctic to study the effects of increased ultraviolet light on the chemical composition of the principal species of Antarctic phytoplankton. Profile.

imageNathalie Dube '04, as an undergraduate medical biology major, conducted a year-long research project on diabetes and cardiomyopathy. Nathalie received a research grant from the American Physiological Society. Upon graduation, she entered UNE's College of Osteopathic Medicine in fall 2005. Profile.

imageKrissy Forman '04, a marine biology and environmental sciences double major, compared and analyzed data on deep ocean marine fauna from videotapes filmed by submersible remote-operated vehicles in two columns of water from off the coast of Japan. Profile.

imageErin Kinzer '06, an English/education major, researched diversity in literature in middle and high school curriculums. She also was one of only 14 students from around the nation appointed to the National Education Association's Student Advisory Committee. Profile.

imageTina Marks '04, a senior majoring in biological sciences, worked on a series of research projects assessing the effects of various antidepressants on learning and memory performance in different strains of mice.
