Quality of Life

"Maine, the Way Life Should Be" is the greeting you encounter entering the state.

Most of the University of New England's undergraduate programs are located on the coastal waterfront Biddeford Campus, which is nestled next to several small summer beach communities. The Biddeford Campus is only a 35-minute ride to Portland, which has been ranked among the top 20 livable small cities for college students in 2010 by the American Institute for Economic Research.

In addition Portland and the greater Portland area are often ranked among the best places to live on a wide variety of criteria.

In 2012, Parenting Magazine listed Portland as the third Best City in the U.S. for Families; the Children's Rights Council has rated Portland the "No. 1 Place to Raise a Child," and Outside magazine ranked Portland as the East Coast's best place to live for outdoor sporting and overall quality of life; and in 2009 Portland was first on's list of "America's Most Livable Cities."

Campus Safety

The University's top priority is the well-being of its students. We continually evaluate current programs as well as review, develop and implement new policies, protocol, staffing and technologies that will improve the University of New England and the safety of its members.

For more information of the pro-active programs and processes in place to improve the safety of the UNE community, visit the University's Office of Safety and Security website. You can also view the University's Annual Security and Fire Safety Report to compare the University's safety record to other colleges and universities.

The University of New England has launched three transportation initiatives to preserve the green spaces on our campuses and to practice one of the university's most cherished core values; stewardship of our environment. These transportation programs allow students to access the amenities of the greater Biddeford and Portland communities without the necessity of bringing a vehicle to campus.

Believed to be the most comprehensive program of its kind in the country, UNE offers free bicycles to the first 150 deposited freshmen who live in the Residence Halls or free Zipcar gift cards for those Freshmen, Sophomore, or Juniors who opt to leave their cars at home.

The program also provides expanded free downtown shuttle service and discounted taxi or limo service on the Biddeford campus. The shuttle bus service connects the Biddeford Campus to Amtrak's train service to Portland and Boston and to an intercity shuttle bus to Portland.
