Academic Excellence

The University of New England is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top tier regional universities in the Northeast. An institution whose academic rigor is matched by its compelling location on the coast of southern Maine, UNE offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and programs, ranging from medical biology to nursing to history to marine sciences.

Four current and recent undergraduate researchers have been awarded prestigious national Goldwater Scholarships.

The coastal area of southern Maine has a long history as a popular vacation destination. Enjoying the ocean comes naturally to students at UNE. It's a beautiful, livable part of the country, and the people are friendly and welcoming.

At the Biddeford Campus, students meet the Atlantic Ocean up close and personal. The campus has more than 4,000 feet of ocean frontage.

The Portland Campus is located in the lovely port city of Portland. The Greater Portland area is also one of Northern New England's most important centers of health care. Portland is also only two hours from Boston.

Everybody Knows Your Name

"UNE is my home way from home. It has such a family feel where everyone knows your name.  There is always a helping hand or a friendly face." - Tara Connell, Psychology Major.

At UNE you're not just a number. Small classes and faculty who care about you inside and outside the classroom create the atmosphere and opportunities to excel. With a faculty/student ratio of 1:13, classes are friendly and collegial, as well as demanding.

So Much to Do

Like to sail, ski, sing, save stranded seals? You'll have a choice of a wide range of campus clubs, organizations and activities at UNE, all of which offer opportunities to make friends, explore shared interests and develop leadership skills. UNE also offers NCAA Division III varsity athletics competition, as well as a wide range of club sports and intramurals.

An Innovative Health Sciences University

UNE is an innovative health sciences university grounded in the liberal arts. It is one of a handful of private universities with a comprehensive health education mission, including medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, nursing and an array of allied health professions.

UNE's interprofessional education initiatives prepare future health care professionals to practice comprehensive and collaborative team-based care. Facilities include the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, the Dental Hygiene Clinic; the Clinical Simulation Program, the Harold Alfond Forum, and the new Patient Care Center that opens in 2013.

Global Education Program

Undergraduate students can take advantage of a variety of opportunities for global experiences whether it be a two-week Cross-cultural Immersion in Healthcare in Ghana; a short-term faculty-led travel course to the Galapagos Islands to study natural history; or a semester abroad in Seville, Spain.

In Seville and at UNE's own Tangier, Morocco campus, which opened in the spring of 2014, students study abroad at no extra cost, staying on track with their curriculums in classes and labs taught in English.

Clinicals, Internships and Research

Whether you are a nursing student on a clinical round at Maine Medical Center's medical surgical unit, a political science student interning at U.S. Senator Susan Collin's office, or an environmental studies major weighing a bobolink chick in a Vermont hayfield, you'll get experience and a competitive edge in your chosen field of study.

Academic programs ensure that students have opportunities for extensive fieldwork, clinical experiences, and internships through University partnerships with area health care facilities, businesses, non-profits and UNE affiliates. Undergraduate students also engage in research and scholarship alongside dedicated faculty who are committed to their academic and professional success.
