Application Qualifications

To qualify for the University of New England Alumni Council 2009 Alumni Scholarship Essay Contest you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a first year full time undergraduate student (freshman status ’08-’09)
    OR
  • Be a returning, full-time* undergraduate student (sophomore/junior status in ’08-’09) for the 2008-2009 academic year and have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.8 at the end of the Fall 2008 semester
  • Part-time students may qualify, however some restrictions apply.  For more information, please contact Mandy Speaker in the University Relations Office at 221-4914.

Essay Topic

In non-partisan terms, describe the conduct of all the parties in the 2008 presidential election.  Using your understanding of our countries and the world’s current issues, elaborate on your descriptions of the parties represented.  Further your observations describing the involvement of the citizenry of the US in this year’s election and the comprehension of the projected priorities for the next four years.


Essay Judging Criteria

Length - 1,200 words (5-6 pages)
      
Content

  • Personal creativity (the judging committee wants to hear the voice of the writer)
  • Research (use at least 5 sources including interviews and/or written publications) which must be documented information sited in a bibliography located at the end of the essay
  • Significance of topic to you as a student
  • Looking for a concise, original and well-written essay
  • Presentation - Typed and double-space
  • Organization
  • Grammar
  • Composition
  • Documentation - MLA Style (MLA style manual available in Library)

Essay Judging Information
and Scholarship Recipient Notification
A committee of members from the University of New England Alumni Council will judge the essays according to the criteria outlined.  Recipients may be awarded scholarships up to the amount of $4,000.  The scholarship recipients will be notified in late March/early April.
