The Exhibition
Profoundly influenced by the 20th century movements of cubism and abstract expressionism, William Manning has gone beyond both, producing over the last five decades a body of work that is absolutely original, like no other, and at the same time, deeply evocative of his Maine roots and especially his love of Monhegan Island.  In his creations there exists a kind of reverence for all the hours of the day and night in his choice of hues and in his abstract forms that meld the organic and geometric into deeply satisfying, complex works of art.

In association with the Jameson Art Group, the University of New England’s Gallery of Art is mounting an exhibition called From Here to Eternitime from July 10 through September 7, 2008.  The UNE Gallery will feature Manning’s paintings primarily from the 1960’s and the 1970’s as well as this decade in a forceful demonstration of William Manning’s breadth and depth over a broad span of time.  During August, his standing paintings from the 1980’s and 1990’s as well as his most recent works on paper will be exhibited at the Jameson Modern.

William Manning has been awarded a MacDowell Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Artist-in-Residence Grant.  His works are in many prominent collections, including those of Bates, Colby, the Farnsworth Museum and the Portland Museum of Art.  Early in his career he taught for a decade at the Portland School of Art (now the Maine College of Art).  He has had numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout his career.
