The Exhibition
This exhibition features photos from Portland Harbor Museum's new book of historic photographs entitled, Picturing Portland: A Century of Change. This new publication includes images from the museum’s Angell Collection of glass plate negatives, most of which date back one hundred years or more, paired with contemporary photographs of the same scenes.
The “then” and “now” photographs reveal the changes that have occurred in the local landscape over the last century. Photographers from the Bakery Photographic Collective took the contemporary photographs.

Commenting on the book on which the exhibition is based, Mark R. Thompson, the museum’s Executive Director, said: “We are pleased to provide the public with this new book showcasing the museum’s exceptional collection of historic images. The contemporary photographs serve as the perfect complement to the stunning images from our collection. The curatorial commentary places the sites depicted into their historical context. As a result, lovers of Greater Portland history as well as photography enthusiasts will enjoy and appreciate this book.”
The publication includes photographs from sites in Portland, South Portland, and Cape Elizabeth, among others. The DiMillo Family and an anonymous friend of the museum provided funding for the book.
The 64-page paperback publication is available for $15 in the museum’s gift shop and at Nonesuch Books, Longfellow Books, and Borders. Interested parties can also contact the museum at (207) 799-6337 or email,
