Collection Scope and Content

This collection contains 45 letters (some on U.S. Army's USO stationery), photographs, and documents by Private Hilton Danielson produced during his time spent at Camp Fannin, Texas (circa 1945). Letters are addressed to his wife Mrs. Lorraine Danielson and cover day-to-day activities they each faced. Letters were sometimes written daily and frequently reference the unreliability of the armed service mailing system. Mr. Danielson talks about training for chemical warfare and how to put on a gas mask, and scolds his wife about missing letters and not writing more. This collection primarily addresses their relationship and what life may be like when he is home. Accompanying the letters are a copy of the Camp Fannin Guidon newspaper dated October 25, 1945, Mr. Danielson's $10,000 life insurance policy through National Service Life Insurance, six photos of the men in Pvt. Danielson's division, two postcards, and a Thanksgiving party invitation. Pvt. Danielson went to see the 11th Regiment vs. 15th Regiment boxing match and within the collection there is a pamphlet listing the boxers. Also included is Mrs. Danielson's Military Army Wives Club pin pass; it was lost and then mailed to Pvt. Danielson, who mailed it back to her.

Records are arranged chronologically.
