Collection Scope and Content
 

This collection contains 89 letters, postcards and documents by and about U.S Navy Pvt. Clyde Denton Jenkins Jr. (created 1936-1946). Jenkin’s served on the U.S.S Bunker Hill and when not at sea was docked in San Diego, California. Most of the letters are addressed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.D Jenkins in Brownwood, Texas and start with him apologizing for not having written them in so long. Jenkins talks about having free time to swim, play basketball and volley ball, and have recreation parties. Personal matters such as Jenkins need to renew a car license and wanting his mother to save memorabilia he sends home are mentioned frequently. Accompanying the letters are a Father’s Day card, a wedding invitation (Wanda Jenkins to David Holik), two newspaper articles, a quiz book, a booklet on which church is right, lessons of life and a Change of Address form.
