Biography

Dr. Shippenberg is Chief of the Integrative Neuroscience Branch of the NIH/National Institute on Drug Addiction Intramural Research Program and Director of the NIDA Confocal Microscopy Core. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Baylor College of Medicine. Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Shippenberg headed the Drug Addiction Research Unit of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. Dr. Shippenberg has published over 150 manuscripts and served as Reviewing Editor for the Journal of Neuroscience. She is currently a member of the Neurotoxicology and Alcohol Study Section, an Associate Editor for the journal and an Editorial Board member of Neuropsychopharmacology. In 2009, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to work with researchers in New Zealand to establish a drug addiction research center. Her research focuses on delineating the role of endogenous opioid systems in drug addiction and on the identification of non-opioid targets for the treatment of pain.
