Hazardous Waste Minimization Initiatives

  • Establish a centralized receiving/inventory program to cut back on chemical waste due to expired or unwanted products.
     
  • Centralize the waste management function to better track waste generation and management costs.
     
  • Educate staff on benefits of waste minimization.
     
  • Perform routine self-audits and pollution prevention assessments.
     
  • Investigate silver recovery or recycling with an outside vendor for photo processing wastes.
     
  • Substitute red liquid thermometers for mercury thermometers where possible.
     
  • Use biodegradable scintillation cocktail.
     
  • Examine waste/excess chemicals to determine if there are other uses within the organization before discarding.
