EMS Pilot Program Chronological Review
July 2001 – UNE applies for membership in a US EPA-New England EMS pilot program.
Summer 2001 – UNE accepted as one of three NE colleges and universities into the pilot program.
Dean Jacques Carter agrees to participate with the College of Arts and Sciences in the pilot program.
November 2001 - UNE signs a Memorandum of Understanding with University of Massachusetts Lowell Environmental Management Systems Service Program (UML EMS). UML EMS coordinates the pilot program. Program cost is $7,500
December 2001 – UNE assigns a management team to the pilot program.
Management Team: Matt Haas, John Tumiel, Tim Kinne, Elisabeth Haase.
December 2001 - Management Team travels to UMass Lowell for the first of four workshops.
January 2002 – Management Team creates a core team, which is comprised of CAS faculty and staff, mailroom staff, Environmental Health and Safety staff, and Facilities.

February 2002 – UNE S.E.A.S (School-wide Environmental Awareness System) slogan adopted
Environmental Policy created for the Fenceline. Environmental Policy is adopted by CAS Dean shared with the University Council.
March 2002 – UNE Environmental Management System Kick-off Event in the Decary Lobby.
Baseline data from CAS collected.
March 2002 - Management Team attends second training workshop at UMass Lowell
April 2002 - Core team-training workshop on creating objectives and targets. Management Team brings in Madeline Snow as the facilitator.
May 2002 - Aspects and Impacts – This is how we determined what projects should be addressed. Core Team chose junk mail reduction and recycling, and hazardous waste minimization as the projects to be addressed in this EMS program.
September 2002 - UNE hosts the third Management Team training workshop.
November 2002 – Liaison position was created between Core Team and Management Team to set up meetings and coordinate all efforts.
December 2002 – Objectives for junk mail project determined: Reduce junk mail at it’s origin, recycle junk mail (remove from waste stream), do not increase costs.
January 15, 2003 – Roll-out of junk mail reduction and recycling – CAS Dean sent out request to faculty and staff to recycle and use reduction kit.
March 2003 – Audit of Junk Mail Recycling Program resulting in total 1 ton recycled over 3 months.
March 2003 – Hazardous Waste Minimization Objectives established: Increase awareness of waste regulations, minimize production of hazardous waste, minimize purchase of hazardous chemicals, minimize costs associated with management and disposal of hazardous waste.
May 2003 – Developed targets and action plan for Hazardous Waste Objectives
August 2003 – CAS laboratory faculty submits consolidated chemical inventory.
September 2003 – UNE SEAS Management Team attends training workshop 3 at UMass Amherst.
October 2003 – Audit of Junk Mail Recycling and Junk Mail Reduction Kit Use – Totals included 2.5 tons junk mail recycled, and 238 junk mail reduction requests made to vendors, with 53 people participating.
October 2003 – Mutli-media survey to determine level of awareness about UNE Toxic Use Reduction Policy in CAS faculty and staff.
November 2003 – Reissued junk mail reduction kit.
February 2004 – Dr. John Warner, presents Principles of Green Chemistry to UNE Faculty, staff and students at Core Connection Series. One-on-one QandA workshop with Dr. Warner held for CAS laboratory faculty and laboratory staff.
February 2004 – Hazardous Waste Minimization Tool Kit developed and distributed to CAS laboratory faculty.
March 2004 – Chemical inventory control system initiated.
March 2004 – EMS audit conducted.
