The salsa rhythms of Grupo Esperanza will fill the Campus Center Monday night. Esperanza is an instrumental nine-piece Afro-Cuban band featuring a jazz-influenced three-piece horn section and a traditional salsa rhythm section.  They play a mix of Cuban favorites and original dance music, ranging from salsa to Latin jazz to funky Afro-Caribbean grooves.  website

Movie - "His Excellency...,The Minister!"

Haitham Mohamed, visiting Fulbright Arabic scholar, will introduce, show, and then discuss the Egyptian comedy, "His Excellency...,The Minister".  A socio-comedy about an office worker who is mistakenly appointed as Minister of Egypt.  Arabic dialog with English subtitles

Documentary: "Invisible Children"

This 1-hour documentary tells the tragic story of children in Uganda who have been kidnapped by rebels and forced to become child soldiers.  The documentary was filmed by three college students who traveled to Northern Uganda in 2003.  The story they uncovered both disgusted and inspired them.  Following the film, will be a discussion on what can be done to help the children.  website

Alexandra "Anda" Panaitiu is a UNE freshman and a native of Romania.  Her presentation will focus on Romania as a country of contrasts.  She will touch on the history, culture, arts, geography and natural beauty of her country as well as discussing what growing up in a developing, ex-communist country has meant to her.  Traditional hand-made clothes, ceramic ware, and elaborately dyed eggs will be on display. 

A Romania lunch will be served.

To be eligible to win the $1000 travel voucher, participants must:

  • be a full-time, matriculated student at UNE
  • have a UNE International Week Passport
  • attend at least 3 Passport to Culture events, evidenced by stamps in the passport
  • have passport stamps validated by the Office of Study Abroad, or Multicultural Affairs
  • submit passport entry form no later than 7:30 p.m., March 27, 2008 
    Entry forms will be collected upon arrival at the International Fashion Show
    Students may submit passports to the Office of Study Abroad, Decary 52, by 4:00 p.m., March 27, 2008

Spotlight on Mexico

Presented by Dr. Stephen Byrd and students

Dr. Byrd and students in the Spanish Language and Mexican Culture class traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico over winter break.  Students lived with Mexican host families, attended the Cemanahuac Institute for Spanish language study, and visited historic and cultural sites including Aztec ruins and Mexico City. 

The students will share photos and narratives from their trip.  Guests are invited to enjoy delicious Mexican food while listening to the presentation.

Dr. Jeri Fox and students in the Coral Reef Ecology class traveled to Belize over winter break to study the fragile ecosystem of coral reefs.  As Belize's economy and tourist industry grow, man's impact on reefs is increasing.
