Where can I study abroad?
The Programs page lists the UNE approved program providers offering study abroad opportunities throughout the world.
What if I don't wish to study abroad for an entire semester?
Many providers offer short-term study abroad courses that take place during non-academic periods. The most common terms are winter break and summer sessions. In addition, there may be opportunities to travel with a UNE faculty member on a short term trip during a semester break.
What are my chances of going abroad?
Study abroad, like many other programs, is competitive. It is possible that students may not receive a placement for the desired semester or location. Flexibility is the key to a successful placement. In addition, study abroad programs usually have rolling admissions, so the sooner you apply the better your chances.
What if I don't speak a foreign language?
Don't let that stop you. You can study abroad in almost any country even though English is your only language. Of course, learning a new language while abroad is an excellent idea and many programs offer entry-level language courses.
What are the eligibility requirements?
While different programs have varying eligibility requirements, UNE students are bound by the following:

What does the application process entail?
The first step is to complete the UNE Off-Campus Study form and return it to the Office of International Programs, Decary 52. We will help you find a program that fits your goals. Once you have decided on a program (or two) you will be required to fill out a program application. Online applications are available on most program provider's websites. An application normally consists of an application form, official university/college transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and proof of insurance.
How much will it cost?
Costs will vary depending on the program you choose. Other expenses, such as room and board, travel, visa and passport fees, local transportation and personal expenses will vary, depending upon the location. Generally speaking, you can take a semester abroad for about the same price or less than a semester at UNE. In addition, there are numerous scholarship opportunities available.
May I use financial aid?
If you are currently receiving financial aid and wish to study abroad, you can transfer almost all of your federal and state aid. Your UNE institutional aid does not travel with you. Be sure to meet with the financial aid office to learn more about how your aid will be affected and what ways you may be able to maximize it for your study abroad semester.
NAFSA Association of International Educators website offers answers to the most frequently asked questions about using financial aid for study abroad.
Are scholarships available?
If you are currently receiving a private scholarship you should check with the organization to see if it is transferable to a study abroad program. It is important to note that students participating in UNE's study abroad programs are still considered matriculating UNE students, and receive UNE credit. You can also apply for a number of other scholarships through the program provider, and local and national organizations that can be found on our website. Scholarships.
Will all my credits transfer?
With proper and careful planning, you can expect your credits will transfer towards a UNE degree. You must attain at least the equivalent of a "C" in order for the credits to transfer. You will work with your academic advisor, and the Office of International Programs to select courses that fit into your learning plan and satisfy degree requirements or electives. You must also complete a Request for Transfer Course Work form that is to be signed by your advisor and the department chair approving the credits.
Will I need a passport to study abroad?
Yes, you will need an individual passport valid for the duration of your stay. If you do not have a passport and are planning to study abroad, apply for your passport at least six months prior to your departure. You can apply for a passport at major post offices, including Portland and Biddeford.
Do I need a student visa to study abroad?
Many countries require a student visa. Once you have chosen a study abroad location, your program provider will give you information on applying for the visa. Consulate and embassy websites also have information on obtaining visas.
How will I get housing when I return to UNE?
If you are returning to UNE in the Fall, you will participate in the housing lottery as if you were on campus. If you are returning in the Spring you must complete a form and return it to the designated representative in the Office of Campus Life. Campus Life will assign you housing based on availability. You may want to communicate with campus life prior to departing on your semester abroad if you have any specific preferences or requests.
