Information for Parents

Your son or daughter has just told you they want to study abroad.  Congratulations!  They are among a growing number of students who are broadening their horizons and enriching their college experience with study in another country.  In fact, they are joined by the U.S. Senate, which declared 2006 the Year of Study Abroad.

The internet, media, airline travel, and international business have brought the world to our doorsteps.  Spending a semester, summer or even a few weeks in a foreign country and immersing oneself in a different culture and environment are fundamental to becoming a global citizen.  Students return from studying abroad as more confident individuals, global thinkers, problem solvers, and highly sought employees by today’s global businesses.

UNE has engaged select organizations that provide outstanding study abroad opportunities.  Reviewing their websites or brochures is a good way to discover which program meets your expectations and academic requirements.

Approved Providers

Preparing to send your son or daughter overseas is exciting and at the same time can be a bit overwhelming.  We realize this may be the first time your student has traveled overseas.  As parents you have a long list of questions and concerns.  The Office of Study Abroad is here to answer your questions and provide information before, during, and after a study abroad experience.

In addition, please review FAQ and other pages on this site to get more information.  We welcome visitors to our office in 52 Decary Hall on the University Campus in Biddeford.  We have a complete library of brochures and publications from all approved programs. Trisha Mason, director for study abroad, looks forward to meeting with individuals and discussing their interests.

Quote

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
