Responsibilities of Advisors and Students
Each advisor is responsible for the following roles and tasks.
Assist students with registration for proper courses per requirements for graduation.
- Monitor student progress on a semester to semester basis.
- Assist students with processing toward graduation.
- Help students identify and correct academic problems.
- Guide students to campus resources for problems that fall beyond the realm of academic advising intervention. (See referral list in this manual.)
- Maintain regular, accessible, office hours for advisement. During pre-registration, consider adding additional hours for student meetings.
- Maintain documentation of advising meetings in each student's file.
With regard to academic advising, students are responsible for the following:
- Assume full responsibility for progressing through curriculum of study as required by the college and departmental policies and procedures.
- Assume full responsibility to know and abide by the college's academic policies and procedures as described in the college catalogue and in the student handbook.
- Recognize that academic advising is a collaborative process between faculty members and students.
- Initiate appointments with advisors at appropriate times, come on time and prepared for advising meetings with proper forms and materials.
