Responsibilities of Advisors and Students

 Each advisor is responsible for the following roles and tasks.

  1. Student studyingAssist students with registration for proper courses per requirements for graduation.
  2. Monitor student progress on a semester to semester basis.
  3. Assist students with processing toward graduation.
  4. Help students identify and correct academic problems. 
  5. Guide students to campus resources for problems that fall beyond the realm of academic advising intervention.  (See referral list in this manual.)
  6. Maintain regular, accessible, office hours for advisement.  During pre-registration, consider adding additional hours for student meetings.
  7. Maintain documentation of advising meetings in each student's file.

With regard to academic advising, students are responsible for the following:

  1. Assume full responsibility for progressing through curriculum of study as required by the college and departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Assume full responsibility to know and abide by the college's academic policies and procedures as described in the college catalogue and in the student handbook.
  3. Recognize that academic advising is a collaborative process between faculty members and students.
  4. Initiate appointments with advisors at appropriate times, come on time and prepared for advising meetings with proper forms and materials.
