Fall Semester Events
The Coalition for Creative Culture Committee aims to establish projects, discussions, events, and productions of an interdisciplinary nature, which integrate the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences with the health professions and science programs of UNE.
This cross-university initiative brings together the creative cultures of the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, The Center for Excellence of Neuroscience, and the Westbrook College of Health Professions.
The Maine Reef
The Maine Reef hosts workshops at UNE. The Maine Reef is a Satellite of the Worldwide Hyperbolic Crochet Reef Project created by Christine and Margaret Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in L.A. The West Oxford Agricultural Society, presenters of the Fryeburg Fair purchased the intellectual property rights from the IFF to be involved in this unique worldwide project. Maine Reef organizers will hold workshops over the next several months for UNE students, faculty, staff, and community members to introduce the project and teach basic crochet forms that can become part of The Maine Reef, which will be installed at the Fiber Center at Fryeburg Fair in 2012. All workshops are FREE and OPEN to all UNE faculty, staff and students and community members.
Sessions are:
Wednesday Sept 21, 5-7pm - Gale Bellew, Introduction to The Maine Reef Project / Intro to Crochet. Decary Cafe Function Room 1
Monday Sept 26- 5-7pm - Crochet Instruction Workshop - Limited to 15 Participants

Tuesday Oct 18- 5-7pm - Crochet Introduction Workshop - Limited to 15 Participants

Note
Yarn will be provided and hooks for use in class, however, Students are encouraged to bring worsted weight yarn and F, G, or H hooks to sessions if you have them.
From Mathematics to Fiber Art
Friday Nov. 4, 12-1 p.m. - Dr. Daina Taimina, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Cornell University, will present her lecture "From Mathematics to Fiber Art"
in the Multipurpose Rooms in the Campus Center followed by a booksigning of her newest book: Crocheting Adventures with Hyberbolic Planes, AK Peters, 2009. Website
Dr. Taimina's lecture is sponsored by The Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Coalition for Creative Culture. The Coalition for Creative Culture is sponsored by the Deans' Offices of CAS, WCHP, the Provost's Office, and the Department of Creative and Fine Arts.
All events are FREE and OPEN to all UNE faculty, staff and students and community members.
Email Sarah Gorham sgorham@une.edu to RSVP for the Sept 21st event and to register for workshops. Workshop spaces are limited so the sign up will be first come first served. There will be information about future workshops at the Introductory session on September 21st.
