Pre-Health Professions Guide

The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of New England has a Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee (PHPAC). The major function of this committee is evaluating students and writing committee letters of recommendation for professional schools (see Letter of Recommendation). The committee can also be used as an information source and for advice on matters such as:

  • Health professional program options
  • Taking the health professional admissions tests
  • Fulfilling requirements for health professional school applications
  • Acquiring other information that might facilitate students' efforts

Additionally, all entering students should seek academic advice from their assigned faculty advisors regarding the requirements of their chosen undergraduate majors.

This handbook is designed to provide general information about health professions programs leading to post-bachelor's degrees, with some guidelines concerning the required courses of study. It gives advice and describes procedures for applying to programs in allopathic medicine, dentistry, optometry, osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, podiatry and veterinary medicine. It is not meant to be an exhaustive source of information, but rather a handbook that highlights some of the most important aspects of the preparation and application process. Students who have additional questions are urged to seek the advice of their academic advisor.
