Faculty

The Department of Chemistry and Physics has a dynamic and energetic faculty dedicated to high quality undergraduate education. The faculty members have specifically chosen to teach and conduct research in an undergraduate setting in order to maximize their interactions with students.

In addition to being excellent teachers in the classroom, the faculty are actively involved in directing undergraduate research, an essential component of a quality undergraduate degree program in the sciences.

The members of the faculty have been successful in securing extramural funding for their research and curriculum development efforts, and several recently have taken their students to national meetings in order to present the results of their research.

Jerome L. Mullin, Ph.D.
Professor of Chemistry and Department Chair
(Analytical Chemistry)

  • Ph.D., Analytical Chemistry, University of New Hampshire, 1983
  • B.S., Chemistry, LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY, 1977
  • Post-doctoral Fellow, University of New Hampshire, 1983-84

Dr. Mullin has been teaching at UNE since 1990, and teaches General Chemistry I and II (CHE 110/111), Quantitative Analysis (CHE 307), Instrumental Analysis (CHE 309), Applied Physical Chemistry (CHE 327) and Independent Research in Chemistry (CHE 410/411). Dr. Mullin's primary research focus has aimed toward the analytical applications of chemiluminescence and the development of fluorescence-based fiber optic sensors. His current projects involve the determination of heavy metal distributions in marine sediments, the determination of other environmentally important analytes in natural samples and investigations of the spectroscopic and electrochemical characteristics of novel organometallic compounds (e.g., Group-14 metalloles) that have unusual photoluminescence properties.

Dan Callahan, M.S.
Lecturer in Chemistry and Laboratory Coordinator
(General Chemistry and General Physics)

  • M.S., Environmental Science and Meteorology, Naval Post-graduate School.
  • B.S., Chemistry, California State Polytechnic University

Dan teaches courses in introductory chemistry and physics for health science majors, as well as General Chemistry and General Physics labs. He occasionally teaches the General Chemistry course, as well. In his role as laboratory coordinator, Dan does an excellent job of making sure that the General Chemistry labs are prepared for each experiment. He also manages the chemistry stockroom and is the department's chemical hygiene officer.

Amy Morin Deveau, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Chemistry (Organic and Medicinal Chemistry)

  • Ph.D., Organic Chemistry, University of Virginia, 2002
  • B.S., Chemistry, Stonehill College, 1996

Dr. Deveau completed her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Virginia with Tim Macdonald focusing on the design and synthesis of heterocycles that arrest cancer cell growth. She then moved to a post-doctoral position in synthetic organic chemistry with Gregory Friestad at the University of Vermont. At UVM, her research involved the total synthesis of tubulysin D, a peptide-based marine natural product.Recently joining UNE in the summer 2003, Amy is currently developing her undergraduate research program. Her interests include the synthesis of medicinally active compounds, particularly those compounds containing unnatural amino acids, aziridines, and other chiral amines. She is teaching the Organic Chemistry series (CHE 210/211 with lab) and Medicinal Chemistry (CHE 404) during the 2003-2004 academic year.

Charles Tilburg, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Physics (Physical Oceanography)

  • Ph.D., Oceanography, The Florida State University
  • M.S., Environmental Engineering, The University of Texas
  • B.S., Aerospace Engineering, The University of Texas

Dr. Tilburg joined the Department in January, 2007. He teaches courses in General Physics and Oceanography. His research focuses on physical oceanography and the circulation of estuaries and the coastal ocean. He is particularly interested in the physical factors that govern the distribution of river plumes, the transport of crab and fish larvae, and across-shelf transport on the continental shelf.
