Chemistry is the "central science" - a fundamental science that touches every aspect of our lives and the world around us. Chemistry is the study of matter: its chemical and physical properties, the chemical and physical changes it undergoes, and the energy changes that accompany those processes. Everything around us, and in us, involves chemistry in some way.

Located on the University of New England's seaside University Campus in Biddeford, Maine, the Department of Chemistry and Physics has a dynamic faculty and excellent facilities in which faculty and students learn and conduct research. The faculty of the Department is committed to excellence in teaching in all of its courses, from introductory courses taken by students in a wide range of programs, to advanced courses designed for chemistry and biochemistry majors. Members of the Department maintain active, cutting-edge research programs and encourage undergraduates to participate in this work.

Degree Programs; Majors and Minors

The Department offers the following degree programs:

• B.S. in Chemistry: The bachelor of science degree in chemistry stresses the important fundamental aspects of the discipline, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry. More...
• B.S. in Biochemistry: The bachelor of science degree in biochemistry provides a balanced curriculum that assures that each student will achieve a substantial foundation in the other major chemical subdisciplines, as well as an emphasis on the theory and techniques of modern biochemistry.  More...
• B.S. in Chemistry/Secondary Education: The chemistry/secondary education major is designed specifically for students who wish to become high school chemistry and/or physical sciences teachers. More...
• B.S. in Laboratory Science: The bachelor of science degree in laboratory science is designed for students who wish to obtain a broad background in chemical and biological laboratory skills. More...

The Department also offers a pre-pharmacy track for students who plan to transfer to a professional pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, and a minor in chemistry for students in majors outside the Department.

• Biochemistry/Pre-Pharmacy Track
  A two-year course of study providing the undergraduate pre-professional education required for admission to the University of New England's College of Pharmacy (and most other pharmacy programs). Four additional years of professional studies are required for the Pharm.D. degree.  More...

Faculty

The Department has a dynamic and energetic faculty representing the major sub-disciplines of chemistry, as well as physics. All members are dedicated to high quality undergraduate education. Each member of the faculty has chosen specifically to  teach and conduct research in an undergraduate setting at an institution that values core strengths in the liberal arts and sciences. In addition to being excellent teachers in the classroom, faculty members are actively involved in directing undergraduate research, an essential component of a quality undergraduate degree program in the sciences. Modern Facilities

The Department has excellent teaching and research facilites. Current teaching and research laboratories are located in the Alfond Center, opened in 1997. Additional state-of-the-art classrooms and teaching laboratories for general chemistry and biochemistry will be available when Morgane Hall opens in January, 2009.
