Student and Alumni Profiles

Students in the Department of Education enjoy the close interaction with faculty and the number of opportunities they have to get into school classrooms from their first year forward. Those on-campus also like the University's active student life.

Below are some links to profiles of some of our students and alumni, who share their experiences as students in the Department of Education:

Teacher Certification Program

Teri Arenstam, now a teacher at Thornton Academy in Saco, decided in her 40s that she wanted to become a teacher and chose UNE's Teacher Certification Program because of its flexibility. Profile.

Andy Young, who completed UNE's Teacher Certification Program, is an English teacher at Kennebunk High School. He says he "felt challenged, supported, and energized each time I entered a classroom at UNE." Profile.

Secondary Education

Catherine E. Giaquinto '05, an English and secondary education major, says of her student teaching: "Kennebunk High School and Marie Maguire, my mentor and cooperating teacher, were amazing teaching experiences. I was given the structure to learn, the encouragement to have my own ideas and implement them, and most importantly - the laughter to get through it all! I loved my time at KHS." Profile.

Erin Kinzer '06, majoring in secondary education and English, is inspired by the beauty of the UNE campus and the caring, supportive education faculty. Profile.

Paris Mansmann '09, a mathematical sciences/secondary education major, says "Being a math major at UNE is a very good choice because the program is growing and with few students majoring in math, I am able to have a closer relationship with my teachers." Spotlight.

Crystal Meunier '08, a mathematical sciences/secondary education major, says "I really enjoyed my first year here at UNE. ... being such a small school you get a lot of one-on-one attention in class and are able to get a better understanding of the material." Spotlight.

Elementary Education

Christine Burr ’07, an elementary education major: "I love UNE’s professor to student ratio. I know all my professors and most of my classmates in the program, which has made my educational experience more valuable."  Profile.

Hilary Doten ’07, an elementary education major: "In the education classes all students are required to spend time observing in classrooms. These have been some of the most valuable experiences for me - there is so much that you cannot learn from a class discussion, such as classroom management."  Profile.

Laurie Richard ’07, an elementary education major: "I really enjoy the small, intimate setting of my education classes. The small professor-to-student ratio is ideal for exploring topics and issues that are interesting and complex." Profile.

Kristen Toussaint ’04, an elementary education major, enjoys UNE's active campus life and the great number of opportunities she has had to get into school classrooms right from the start. Profile.

Cara Valletta '03, an elementary education major, likes the fact that the program immerses student in classroom observations from the start. Profile.

Art Education

Betsy Johnson '06, an art education major, says, "From the first education class I took I was in classrooms observing and learning from these observations. I think by having these observations it really helps the students to learn if education is right for them. For me these observations gave me great opportunities to learn from the teachers and get ideas for my future classroom. Spotlight

Adrienne Noble '08, an art education major, says, "At UNE, unlike most schools, we start observing public school classrooms in our first year. It’s a great opportunity to make sure this is what you want to do after graduation, and also learn great tricks from teachers who have done the job before."   Profile.

M.S. Ed. Distance Learning

Kathi Iwanusa '00, a graduate of the Master's Degree in Education Distance Learning Program, liked the program because it fit easily into the life of her family and her career as a full-time teacher. Profile.
