Student and Alumni Profiles
Students in the Department of English enjoy the program’s multicultural and multi-theoretical approaches to literature and culture, the close relationships they form with English faculty, the flexible program of study, small classes, and the beauty of the coastal Maine campus.
Below are some links to profiles of some of our students and alumni who share their experiences as students in the Department of English:
Emma Bouthillette '08: 'The professors really get to know each of their students and take the time to help you as needed. Courses offered are thorough, creative and thought provoking.' Profile.
Camille Smalley '08, an English major with a minor in women's studies, spent the fall semester 2006 on research that looks at societal expectations of women during the early twentieth-century and how the state chose to deal with those "bad girls" who didn’t conform. Profile.
Amanda Johnson '07: "The departments are small, which is great because all of the professors get to know you on an individual basis. I specifically like how each professor in the English department has their own specialty, because I can choose elective courses within my major that interest me the most." Profile.
Jamie Thompson '07: "The campus is beautiful! I love the ocean, and being able to see the water through the trees while I walk to class transforms the mundane to the extraordinary." Profile.
Laurie Richard '07: "Thanks to all of my English professors, my writing skills have improved tremendously since I began my career here at UNE." Profile.
Brady Potter '06: "While the English Department and Women's Studies Department are not the largest departments at UNE, I honestly feel that they are some of the strongest. What I like most about UNE and these two departments is the welcoming atmosphere." Profile.
Aaron Mennella '06: "I think that the quality I like the most about UNE is the waterfront view. But aside from that the faculty and staff are very helpful and they always have time to cater to your personal concerns. I think that that is an important quality."
Profile.Catherine Giaquinto '05 says: "All of the professors in the English Department are well-versed and passionate about their subjects and as a bonus - they are very friendly! The department is well-balanced in terms of academic pursuits, and therefore they complement each other well." Profile.
Kristie Worster '04: "What I most cheerish about UNE's English Department is the caring and helpful faculty. Their endless efforts to help students, from all backgrounds, become educated readers and writers makes the department shine."
