Student and Alumni Profiles

Students and ProfessorsStudents in the Department of English enjoy the program’s multicultural and multi-theoretical approaches to literature and culture, the close relationships they form with English faculty, the flexible program of study, small classes, and the beauty of the coastal Maine campus.

Below are some links to profiles of some of our students and alumni who share their experiences as students in the Department of English:

"I had the opportunity to go to Ireland and study the Book of Kells and its relationship to the lyric poetry of William Butler Yeats at the turn of the twentieth century." read more

"I'd have to say the biggest "ah-ha" moment for me was having the proposal to present my honors research at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association National Conference accepted, and having the chair of the panel tell us he usually works a book deal out of the papers we present for the conference. There are very few undergraduates who present at this conference, and it made me feel really great about how far I've come in my education at UNE with the encouragement and advisement of my professors." read more

"I love being an English student, and it may be because of my pure passion for the language, but I attribute a lot of that passion to my professors’ abilities to instill excitement and relevance to the literature we read and stress the importance of our writing." read more

"Because of this internship, I am teaching at Kennebunk High School as a full-time English teacher. I am 100% positive that I would not be in this amazing position without my internship in the spring." read more

"UNE boasts 'connections for life.' And that is exactly what UNE gave me and what I value the most from the four years I spent there. UNE connected me with people that changed my life, ideas that I'll always live by and, most importantly for me, UNE connected me with the rest of the world." read more

"In my major and minor departments I felt very connected with the faculty and staff. I enjoyed being a face in the classroom rather than a number. The one-on-one connection with the teachers and the students, and the learning that takes place within this small classroom setting, was one of my most valued memories of UNE." read more

"More than anything, I loved the supportive environment at UNE - a fact I appreciate more than ever after spending a graduate year at a large university." read more

"The class that really shaped my educational future was the Museums and Public History course team taught by Dr. Elizabeth De Wolfe and former Saco Museum Director Andrea Cochrane. In this course we (the class members) created a museum exhibit from Dr. De Wolfe's book, "The Murder of Mary Bean."" read more

"The English Department, in particular, utilized the small classroom numbers and gave each student a great deal of attention. In fact, it felt more like one-on-one tutoring than simple course lectures." read more

"I was also involved in varsity athletics at school. I played for the women's basketball team. One of the main reasons I chose this school was because it was a Division III school where there was a major focus on academics. I can work my classes around basketball and still have time to finish homework." read more

"Many of the departments at UNE are small, which is a great advantage for students because all of the professors know their students on an individual basis. Focusing primarily on the English department, I specifically liked how each professor in the English department has their own specialty, because as a student, I could choose elective courses within my major that interested me the most." read more

"I became involved with the university's literary journal, "Zephyr," when I was a sophomore as a member of the editorial board. I was offered the position of editor-in-chief and remained so until my graduation. For two years I gained hands-on knowledge about the editorial and publishing process, which was a great opportunity for me." read more

"What I like most about UNE and these two departments is the welcoming atmosphere. The faculty in my departments of study are extremely enthusiastic about my education and my growth as a student and that makes me more excited about what I am learning." read more

"My experience with the literary magazine, Zephyr, was very fulfilling. Susan McHugh, my academic advisor and Zephyr's faculty advisor as well, was invaluable in this process. We have learned together how to make Zephyr great, and the knowledge I have acquired will serve me well in the future. It was a lot of fun, too!" read more
