Short Biography

Dr. John Lemons has been a department chair or program director at three different universities and has authored over one hundred articles on scientific uncertainty, national park management, conservation of biodiversity, climate change, high–level nuclear waste disposal, environmental ethics, sustainable development, and environmental education.

Dr. Lemons also has produced eight books, including (1) "Sustainable Development: Science, Ethics, and Public Policy," by Kluwer Academic Publishers; (2) "Scientific Uncertainty and Environmental Problem–Solving," by Blackwell Science, Inc.; and (3) "Conserving Biodiversity in Drylands," by Kluwer Academic Publishers.  Dr. Lemons has served as editor–in–chief of "The Environmental Professional," the official journal of the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) from 1990 through 1995, as well as on various journals’ editorial boards.

In 1996, he was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to environmental science and public policy. In 1984, Dr. Lemons received the "Maurice Simpson Award" from the Institute of Environmental Sciences for the best paper published in environmental science, and in 2002 he received the first career award for distinguished research from the University of New England.

Finally, Dr. Lemons has extensive international experience, including with the Third World Network of Scientific Organizations in Trieste, Italy, and as a visiting professor at universities in the U.K., Sultanate of Oman, and Brasil.
