Sport and Fitness Management Major
I am from Hampden, which is a small town right outside of Bangor located in Central Maine, about two hours north of the University of New England. I chose UNE because of the location, the size and the friendly atmosphere. I started at UNE as an occupational therapy major and, after my first year, found that it wasn’t for me. I was really interested in becoming an athletic director so sport and fitness management was the way to go.
Studying sport management at UNE allowed me to develop a close relationship with my professors because of the small class atmosphere. Having your professors not only know your name but also know some things about you makes you feel so much more comfortable and right at home. Not only was I able to develop good relationships with my professors but also with some of UNE’s staff members.
From day one I felt like I fit in at UNE. Being away from home it is important to find the second home, and that is what UNE was for me. The location of UNE is also a major bonus! Not many schools allow you the opportunity to live right on the ocean. The people that I have met through my years at UNE are unforgettable.
InternshipsDuring my senior year at UNE I completed two different internships that had a major impact on my career goals. My first internship was with Matt Richards in Recreational Sports. I was the intern for the New England Collegiate Roller Hockey Association, which Matt was president of. This internship allowed me to gain knowledge of roller hockey and how club sports were run.
My second internship was with Don Wilson, the athletic director at Biddeford High School. This internship furthered my interests in becoming an athletic director, and I learned more about this profession. The internship experience is a very important part to developing as a professional in the field. It allows you to get hands-on experience in your field, and it gives you ideas about your future plans.
Since I GraduatedI graduated in May 2002. Currently I am getting my master’s in sport management at Old Dominion University. ODU is located in Norfolk, VA and is a large University, with about 10,000 students. I am a graduate assistant in the Recreational Sports Department.
After completing my master’s degree I would like to get some more experience in the recreational sports department, and then someday I would like to become an athletic director at a High School or a Division II or III school. Right now everything is wide open, and I am just waiting to see where life takes me.
