Marine Research and Classroom Facilities
The University of New England has some of the best research and classroom facilities in the nation for the study of biology. The University Campus in Biddeford is a confluence of natural resources that has attracted and inspired students and faculty with an interest in the natural environment. In addition to the Marine Science Education and Research Center and Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, the University also has extensive computer resources as well as other laboratory and classroom facilities.
Marine Science Education
and Research Center
The new Marine Science Education and Research Center, which opened fall 2001, provides students, faculty and visiting researchers a window to the sea. This new Center is the only facility of its kind anywhere, giving researchers a unique opportunity to create important new knowledge in marine science, the environment and human health.
The facility contains two state-of-the-art flow-through teaching seawater laboratories, a third lab dedicated to aquaculture and marine biology research, and a marine mammal rehabilitation clinic, with seal tanks and diagnostic and medical care labs. For more information visit the Marine Science Education and Research Center website.
Peter and Cécile Morgane Hall
Peter and Cécile Morgane Hall is an academic science building that houses two classrooms, undergraduate teaching laboratory space and offices. Laboratory space in this 25,800-square-foot brick building includes two biology labs, two chemistry labs, two physics labs, one biochemistry lab, one genetics lab, and several small research labs with associated prep rooms.
These laboratories are equipped with computer simulators for in depth study of physical and biological concepts. In addition to realistic models, the biology laboratory has microscopes and dissection capabilities for the anatomy, phyisology and pathophysiology courses.
Harold Alfond Center for the Health Sciences
The Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences is a modern laboratory and educational facility. Located at the center of campus, this three-story building housing laboratories and lecture halls places the University at the national forefront of health and life sciences education.
The Center's well-designed instructional and research lab for organic chemistry is unequaled as an undergraduate teaching facility. Its gross anatomy lab is used by medical, health professions and athletic training students, and its fresh tissue lab is one of the most advanced facilities in the world.
Other Alfond Center facilities include:
- developmental biology / genetics laboratory
- general biology laboratories
- indoor-access greenhouse
- instrumental analysis laboratory
- general chemistry laboratories
- quantitative analysis laboratory
- organic chemistry laboratory with 24 individual student hoods
