Marine Sciences

Honors Program

The Department of Marine Sciences sponsors an Honors program. The goal of the Marine Sciences Honors Program is to engage advanced students in high quality, independent research under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Students typically conduct their research projects during their junior and/or senior year, culminating in a written thesis and oral presentation, which, if approved by an honors examining committee, leads to the award of a bachelor’s degree "with Honors". The Marine Science Department does not offer the Scholastic Honors option described in the CAS Honors guidelines.

Qualifying students (GPA higher than 3.5) can enter the Marine Sciences Honors programs by taking the Sophomore Research Seminar HONR180 and submitting an application form to the chair of the CAS Honors program AND the Director of the Marine Sciences Honors Program.

Students then need to find a faculty mentor and develop a thesis proposal. Students usually submit their thesis proposal in December or April of their junior year.

A list of faculty and their respective research interests can be found here .

The official Marine Sciences Honors Program guidelines are available here
