Reason for Rehabilitation: She was mostly bald and also had many small lacerations on her rear flippers. This seal's skin was treated and she re-grew her hair. The minor wounds healed well.

Straight Length: 97 cm
Reason for Rehabilitation: This seal was dehydrated, had fungal dermatitis over half her body and had some small wounds at the base of her tail and on her upper lip. Her skin condition was treated and the seal re-grew her hair. This seal also regurgitated rocks that it had apparently swallowed on the beach before rescue.

Reason for Rehabilitation:: This animal was seen eating sand and small rocks on the beach, he was dehydrated and slightly underweight. He also had a 4 laceration on his right side and was suffering from a broken lower jaw. He underwent surgery to repair the broken jaw and was treated for parasites. He began eating well shortly after jaw surgery.

Incoming Weight: 69.63 lbs (31.65 kgs)
Straight Length: 131.5 cm
Reason for Rehabilitation: Animal stranded very dehydrated and suffering from injuries that were possibly caused by a previous stranding during the winter months. Her tail flukes were damaged and she lost about 1/3 of the fluke to possible frostbite obtained from her previous stranding. She was also suffering from inanition at the time of her stranding. She began eating on her own within a week, and swimming stronger. She received a few months of medical care including physical therapy and weighed 91 lbs. at the time of her release.

Reason for Rehabilitation:
#13 had puncture wounds of unknown origin that were infected. He was put on antibiotics and assist fed until he could eat on his own again. This seal progressed nicely and was fully healed after two months of care.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This seal was found lethargic, thin, and dehydrated, with lesions on his flippers. He regained strength after receiving fluids and being assist fed. The lesions all healed prior to his release.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This seal was dehydrated and lethargic when rescued. He was treated with fluids and quickly ate fish on his own, so his stay in rehabilitation was short.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #18 was rescued with a monofilament line entanglement injury to his neck and some cuts on his foreflippers. All wounds were successfully treated and healed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This animal came in very thin and dehydrated, and her teeth were just erupting. She also developed an eye infection, which was successfully treated. #25 was a slow learner but finally learned how to eat fish on her own and gained a total of 34 lbs during her rehabilitation.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This seal had a broken jaw and two lacerations on its right side that appeared to have been caused by a boat strike. In addition, several teeth were loose and subsequently fell out of the damaged jaw. #29 underwent surgery to wire the jaw bones back together and it healed well. The lacerations also healed. This seal demonstrated that she had no trouble grabbing and swallowing fish once her jaw was repaired.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #32 was very thin and lethargic at the time of her rescue. She had a puncture wound on the back of her head, a neck wound and many abcesses on her flippers. This seal grew rapidly and weighed 76.5 lbs. at the time of her release.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This animal came in with a bleeding mouth, severe gingivitis and a lesion on the left side of her body. She was treated for several small abrasions as well. Her mouth was treated and has healed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #42 came in with mild gingivitis in her mouth and her umbilicus was open. Treatments cleaned this seal's mouth and she learned to eat fish on her own. The umbilicus fully healed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #43 was rescued with small abcesses on all flippers and an open umbilicus. This seal healed quickly and was one of the first pups of this year to eat on its own.

Special Note: This seal was satellite tagged at release as part of an EPA Demonstration Grant awarded to the University of New England. One aspect of the study examines harbor seal pup survival and habitat use.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #46 had a lesion on his left front flipper palm and an infected umbilicus at the time of his rescue. Antibiotics were administered to cure his infection and this seal gained 52 lbs. prior to release.

Reason for Rehabilitation: Seal #50 came in very undersized and thin, and had an abscess on her right front flipper. This seal gained weight rapidly and at release she weighed 70.7 lbs.! Her flipper abscess completely healed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This animal was very thin and had small abscesses on her front and rear flippers when she was rescued. She had an open umbilicus and was sneezing. The seal was treated with antibiotics and topical treatments for her flipper abcesses.

Reason for Rehabilitation: This animal came in with two large lacerations on her right rear flank, possibly from a shark bite. She also had small puncture wounds on her rear flippers. #57 had minor surgery to close the large gashes and they healed remarkably well. The wound is now completely closed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: #63 came in looking thin and she had an injured left eye. We provided treatment for the eye through antibiotic eye drops and although there was some remaining scar tissue the seal could see out of the eye. #63 also gained 17 lbs. while at MARC.
