Stranded at:  Short Sands Beach, York, Maine
Sex & Age:  Female, Yearling
Reason for Rehabilitation:  #2 was observed on the beach in mid-January, lethargic and dehydrated. She also suffered from an injured jaw and an abscess on her rear flipper, both of which have healed nicely. She had a lice-infestation, which was treated.  She was treated for a bacterial infectionprior to release.

Stranded at:  Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Sex & Age:  Male, Yearling
Reason for Rehabilitation:  #3 was collected when he was observed hanging out on the beach for an extensive period of time. He was extremely emaciated and covered in lice. He was treated for a bacterial infection common in terrestrial animals that causes liver and kidney damage if untreated.  Release Date:  March 20, 2007

Stranded at:  Crescent Beach, Wells, Maine
Sex & Age:  Female, Yearling
Reason for Rehabilitation:  #4 was collected after being observed on the beach for 2 days demonstrating extreme lethargy.  Bloodwork and behavior confirmed that #4 was suffering from hypernatremia (severe dehydration and high sodium levels in the body).  Over the first few hours, #4 was treated with fluid therapy to rehydrate and balance her body's electrolyte levels.

Reason for Rehabilitation:  #5 entered our rehabilitation program suffering from slight dehydration (as verified by blood analysis). He also has several wounds surrounding his mouth and nares, and a slight abrasion on his eye. #5 also had an injury to his left foreflipper, which was determined through x-ray to have been a broken digit. The nail of the infected digit was removed.

Reason for Rehabilitation: Following a 5 day
observation period, this adult harp seal was collected
and transported to the Marine Animal Rehabilitation
Center. He was suffering from severe dehydration,
as well as chronic liver and kidney failure. The
underlying cause of this organ damage was treated.

New Jersey's Marine Mammal Stranding
Center with a swollen rear flipper and minor
wounds around his mouth.  He was placed
on antibiotics and transferrred to MARC. 
Since coming to MARC, the swelling in his
flipper has decreased and upon x-ray, it was
determined that he was suffering from osteomyelitis (bone infection).
