The Marine Science Education and Research Center offers a full range of state-of-the-art facilities that are available to both on and off-campus users:

Education
  • One 24-student classroom with full audiovisual equipment.
  • Two 24-student laboratories (approximately 1,440 sq. feet each):
    • Full audiovisual equipment
    • Flowing seawater (both peripheral tanks and delivery to lab benches)
    • Microscopes
    • Field and laboratory sampling equipment
Laboratory Research
  • imageHigh capacity flowing seawater system (up to 250 gal. per min.) with a variety of tank configurations
  • Temperature control for seawater (40 – 85°F)
  • Molecular lab:
    • 2 Eppendorf thermocyclers
    • Incubator/shaker
    • Microcentrifuge
    • Heat block
    • Gel boxes and power supplies
    • Photodocumentation system
    • Freezers, refrigerators, and ultra-cold freezer
    • On-campus access to a Licor automated squencer
Field Research
  • Access to a variety of subtidal, intertidal, and salt marsh habitats.
  • Dock and moorings to support vessel logistics.
  • Two boats:
    • 23’ Maritime Patriot with a 225 HP Honda outboard (Press Release)
    • 17’ Carolina Skiff with a 50 HP Evinrude outboard
    • Electronic sampling equipment (e.g., CTD, temperature loggers)
    • Organism sampling equipment (e.g., trawls, seines, grabs, plankton nets, etc.)
