Unique Facilities and Opportunities

imageStudents majoring in psychology, neuroscience, animal behavior, and psychology and social relations benefit from University of New England's unique resources.  Some of our most important resources include the University of New England's state-of-the-art Marine Science Education and Research Center, the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

  • Animal Behavior Lab and
    Cognitive/Social Psychology Labs
These labs are dedicated solely to the research projects of faculty members in the Psychology Department. Students have opportunities to work with faculty members on variety of research projects, such as behavioral treatment of motion sickness, trust and forgiveness in close relationships and friendships, development of strategies for coping with stress in children, factors that influence reconstructive memory, the relationship between nervous system responses and political attitudes, communication patterns in autistic children, long-term relationship in a lesbian couple, factors influencing the training of zebra fish, body dysmorphic disorder, and resilience in children and adults.
  • Neuroscience Labs
Our faculty with expertise in the neurosciences also has labs dedicated to research on psychopharmacology, drug addiction and pain.  Additionally, affiliated faculty working with our majors in neuroscience investigate sterod hormone signaling in fruit fly social behavior, and the development of  safer and more effective drug treaments for pain.
  • UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine
Undergraduate students work with medical school faculty on a variety of biomedical research projects.  We are very fortunate to have College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty working with us to deliver the Neuroscience major.  Website
  • Marine Science Center and
    Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center
The Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center provides students with opportunities to observe marine animals and assist with their care and feeding. Website
  • The Center for Excellence
    in the Neurosciences
The Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences is a new initiative that links multidisciplinary faculty and students at UNE and neuroscience experts from other institutions.  One of the activities of the center is that it helps support an active on-campus biomedical research seminar series.   The program features timely lectures and discussions in the broadly defined fields of the neurosciences, molecular, cellular and whole systems physiology, pharmacology, psychology and the cognitive sciences. A mix of external experts and center-affiliated faculty participate in the program, and we aim to involve students, faculty and staff who share common interests in preclinical and clinical neuroscience.
