Rachelle Haddix '05

Notes on and from Mexico:

I am Rachelle Haddix. I was born and raised in the Midwest and have lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan for the better part of my late childhood. I am 20 years old and going into my junior year at University of New England.

My major is sociology and my minor biology. The full extent of my post college plans is traveling, but I hope to come up with a little more detailed plan when the time comes. I am going to Mexico because I want to understand realities greater than my own.

I want to understand what it means to not be an American, to not be white, to not have money, or justice, or security, or privilege. I want to know what its like to live a thousand worlds away from the existence I have so happily settled into. I wonder what others wake up to each morning and go to bed to each night, what they worry and dream about. I want to know what its like to live in a different world for a little while.

I am sure that living in an American sanctuary in another country will only let me look out into a world that I could never totally understand, but its better then never trying to see beyond my reality. We are all just humans trying to get by, and I just want to understand.

We just got to the dorm houses in Cuernevaca last night. They are very nice, beyond all expectations. Today we are out for our first walk around town. So far it looks to be very nice and clean and safe.

The week with Borderlinks was great. It was packed with meetings with border patrol, migrants, Mexican families on both sides of the border, Immigration Services, indigenous community and spiritual leaders, and maquiadora. The first assignment is due on Friday. It is a reflection on our border experiences.
