Professional Internships

The internship is designed to provide the student with an intensive experiential learning opportunity in a setting that will help him or her make career choices, career contacts, and develop professional skills. Often this reflects personal experience. Students are not limited, however, in their choices.

Faculty will work closely with a student to select a learning opportunity that is most effective for the student. The student may work in an area social service agency, educational program, or other socially applicable setting. It is expected that students will apply the knowledge base and learning skills they have acquired in their time at UNE in general and in the Department of Sociology specifically to their internship experience.

The internship may be chosen as a 3-credit course or some students will choose to perform an intensive professional internship to fulfill their Applied Sociological Experience requirement. This may build on a previous internship or personal experience.

imageThe internship as an Applied Sociological Experience will range from 9 to 16 credits. These credits are taken cumulatively through SOC 493: Applied Sociological Experience: Internship. It is offered each semester and in the summer. It may be paid or unpaid depending on the supervising agency.

If the student chooses only nine hours they can continue to take courses on campus toward their degree. If the student chooses sixteen credits they are expected to work full-time for the agency. It is recommended that students take this in the spring of their third year or the fall of their fourth year.
