Another Applied Sociological Experience option is to complete an intensive applied sociological project.
The goal is to provide students with an opportunity to enhance their skills or experiences in an area of sociology that appeals to them. It will also assist in their career and educational choices. This project can take several forms and it is up to the student and faculty supervisor to devise a program that meets the needs of the student and the ASE requirement.
The project can be a traditional senior thesis that entails extensive primary and secondary research. Students will also have the option to work with faculty on scholarship. Either of these approaches could lead to the production of publishable work.
The Capstone can also be an applied project in which a student works on legislation with a state representative or agency. Or, a student may opt to help design and implement a public awareness campaign on an environmental issue. It is expected that students will apply the knowledge base and learning skills they have acquired in their time at UNE in general and in the Department of Sociology specifically to their Capstone experience.
The Capstone Project will range from nine to 16 credits. These credits are taken cumulatively through SOC 494: Applied Sociological Experience: Capstone Thesis.
It is offered each semester and in the summer. If the student chooses only nine hours they can continue to take courses on campus toward their degree. If the student chooses 16 credits they can be expected to work full-time on their Capstone project. It is recommended that students take this in the spring of their third year or the fall of their fourth year. For examples of student projects see Student Projects.
