REACH is a state-wide network of Maine colleges and universities and community prevention programs with two mutually supportive goals:
- To provide program evaluation assistance to local youth prevention efforts,
- To offer authentic community-based learning experiences for college students
How did REACH get started?
REACH began as a way to continue the gains in evaluation capacity made by community-based prevention programs participating in a RAND Corporation-led grant to evaluate an implementation support intervention called Assets-Getting To Outcomes (AGTO).
In that grant (funded by NIDA, led by Matthew Chinman of RAND), 6 community coalitions and their programs received the two-year AGTO intervention (manuals, training, onsite technical assistance) and a second group carried on practice as usual (but received AGTO later in the grant). The intent of the AGTO intervention is to build capacity for high quality prevention—including evaluation capacity.
After many programs made significant gains, many in Maine, especially Maryann Corsello of UNE, who joined the grant’s Project Leadership Team—did not want to see those gains disappear. Thus, Dr. Corsello with support of the AGTO Project Leadership Team, developed the REACH collaborative.
