Center for Excellence in
Interprofessional Education

"None of us is as smart as all of us."

- Japanese Proverb

The Center for Excellence in Interprofessional Education (CEIPE) brings together the vibrant and innovative resources of Maine's University of New England to create educational programming responsive to the evolving needs of the 21st century collaborative healthcare workforce. CEIPE initiatives are multi-level and intended to influence the culture of health education and healthcare practice across domains.

Educational programming focuses on cross-disciplinary classroom-based shared learning opportunities, extracurricular activities, co-curricular events, for example the annual Spring Symposium (pdf) and the IPE Case Conference; and IPE curriculum development. Clinical opportunities occur in service learning venues and increasingly in community clinical sites. Faculty also engages in IPE scholarship and research and students have two annual opportunities to share their discoveries during Scholarship and Research Days.

CEIPE Mission: To educate future health professionals, health professional faculty, health care practitioners, and leaders in health care quality improvements to engage in team-based care that is comprehensive, collaborative, caring, safe, and continuous throughout the life cycle.

CEIPE initiatives are bolstered by supportive relationships with Colleges across UNE’s two campuses and through collaborative ventures with the Center of Excellence in Neuroscience and the Center for Excellence in Public Health.

CEIPE takes a special interest in developing programs that educate students for healthcare practice that is culturally-prepared for a range of populations. This is in part because of Maine’s rural nature, its home and proximity to various tribal nations, and also as a result of its growing immigrant, refugee and asylum-seeking populations.

HRSA Grant supports Interprofessional Outreach

We are delighted to announce that the Nursing program in the Westbrook College of Health Professions has received a three year, $1.2 million award to "develop nurse leaders and interprofessional practice environments that reach underserved communities, specifically immigrant and refugees in the Greater Portland area."

Lead by PI and Project Director Jennifer Morton, DNP, MPH, APHN, with co-directors Associate Dean Karen Pardue and Dr. Shelley Cohen Konrad, the award is titled "Calling Forward Nurse Leaders and Interprofessional Teams to Advance the Health of Immigrant and Refugee Communities."

The work involves a collaboration with the Portland Community Health Center (PCHC) and Portland Public Health on activities of health education/ training, practice site direct service and community outreach at the Riverton Housing Satellite (FQHC) in the City of Portland.

We are honored to be the recipients of this highly competitive award and are grateful to Dr. Morton, Associate Dean Pardue and Dr. Cohen Konrad for their leadership.
