Course Description:

This course is designed to give the student the training and confidence necessary to successfully sit for the state of Maine radiology-licensing exam. 

This program consists of 8 hours didactic training on radiology theory and application as well as 8 hours of practical hands-on experience with typodonts as a real patient practicum opportunity.  This course will cover techniques for taking Intra-oral films, occlusal films as well as panorex films.  Digital x-ray theory will be covered as well and the opportunity to expose digital films will be included as well.

The fee for this course is $280.00 and includes all supplies.

Cancellation & Refunds:

Due to the limited number of seats available in this course, there is a $50.00 non-refundable deposit.  In the unlikely event of low enrollment, the course may be subject to cancellation.  In case of cancellation by UNE, registrants will be notified by phone or by letter and a full refund will be given.  Participants may withdraw up to fifteen days prior to the start of the program and receive a refund less a $25.00 processing fee AND the $50.00 non refundable deposit.  There are no refunds fifteen or fewer days prior to the start of the course.

ADMINISTRATION OF LOCAL ANESTHESIA & NITROUS OXIDE FOR THE DENTAL HYGIENIST

Course Description:

In response to the rule change permitting dental hygienists to receive an additional credential to administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide, the University of New England has prepared an exciting, clinically oriented course for dental hygiene professionals.

In this comprehensive course, the participant will learn the basic concepts of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide administration and then practice the actual techniques for safe, effective administration.  Participants will also gain experience in medical history review, vital sign collection, record keeping and patient management.

The course totals sixty-eight contact hours of classroom and clinical instruction. 

The clinical component will involve the administration of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide in a lab setting using human patient simulators and on partners as an introductory exercise.  The required fifty injections will be administered in the clinical environment under the direct supervision of skilled dentists and with the close guidance of experienced UNE faculty.  Participants are expected to work as partners or provide appropriate patients of their own for the clinical sessions.

The use of human patient simulators in this course is part of the UNE's dental patient simulation initiative, made possible through the support of Delta Dental Plan of Maine.


Who is Eligible?

Dental hygienists holding or seeking a Maine license to practice dental hygiene.  Participants must hold and present a copy of current CPR certification prior to the beginning of the course.  Participants must also take the required UNE HIPAA training.



Course Location:

All sessions are held at the Westbrook College Campus of the University of New England, 716 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine.


Course Schedule:

The course will be offered over four consecutive weekends.  Lectures are Fridays, 9:00am – 5:00pm.  Clinics are Saturdays, 8:00am – 5:00pm.  The course totals 68 hours, as required.


Faculty:

The Dental Hygiene Program has been successfully teaching Pain Control and Local Anesthesia for a number of years to our undergraduate dental hygiene students and to professionals seeking to continue learning.  This course will follow that tradition and will be taught by qualified faculty members with extensive experience in dentistry, dental hygiene, and anesthesia administration.


Tuition:

The tuition for the course is $1,995, and includes clinical materials.  Students are responsible for purchasing the current edition of the required textbooks , “Handbook of Local Anesthesia, 5th edition”, by Stanley Malamed (Mosby) and “Handbook of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation”, 2nd Edition by Morris Clark and Ann Brunick, which are available through the UNE bookstore (Tel: 207/221-4255).

Accreditation:

This course meets the requirements set forth by the Maine Board of Dental Examiners.  Once the course is completed, candidates for the local anesthesia endorsement to the dental hygiene license must pass a written Board administered test. Candidates must receive a minimum of 75% on both the exit examination and course grade in order to obtain the nitrous oxide endorsement   UNE cannot be held responsible for successful completion of the board exam.  For further information about the examination process or standards please contact the Maine Board of Dental Examiners (Tel: 207/287-3333).
