Overview

Project management is one of the hottest fields today. The project management discipline is expanding in all industries and organizations are increasing their focus on recruiting educated professionals. Project management skills are becoming a required core competency for growth within quality-oriented organizations.

Project management's growth has been fueled by a demand for expertise in handling change and innovation. Multi-tiered classical management has proven to be an ineffective vehicle for managing projects and teams. The trend toward flatter management structures hosting semiautonomous work groups requires solid project management skills.

The University of New England’s project management program at the Westbrook College Campus in Portland is designed for students from small or large companies, and for small business entrepreneurs who have recently started new businesses, or are encountering accelerated growth. You will benefit from the experience of our practitioner instructors. Prepare for your projects - and your career - to move forward.

Who should enroll:

    • People who have just been assigned to their first project
    • Those who have managed a few projects and want to improve their efficiency and effectiveness
    • Seasoned project managers who want to see new tools, techniques and directions of the profession
    • Company managers who are looking for a way to grow the firm
    • Anyone seeking the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification
    • PMP®s seeking continued education and credentialing renewal credits

Learn to:

    • Effectively plan and consistently implement successful projects
    • Lead new product or business strategy development efforts
    • Be an effective team leader or player and understand others better
    • Develop  time management, problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills
    • Reduce project risk and improve quality
    • Manage outside contractors and equipment procurements
    • Change the way the firm chooses and executes projects

About the Project Management Institute (PMI)

The Project Management Institute, founded in 1969, is a 200,000+ member international association dedicated to developing professional standards for the field while providing research and educational support for its members. The Maine Chapter of the Project Management Institute, established in 1986 and recognized as one of the most active chapters in the country, endorses the UNE program.
The chapter supports its members' efforts to achieve professional certification, provides technical and advisory services to industry, and participates in, and seeks out community service projects. Course participants are invited to network with members of this organization and take advantage of its excellent referral and knowledge sharing capabilities.

Project Management Institute Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Orientation and Teaching Approach

PMI’s project management methoodology consists of “knowledge” areas that are essential to a project’s success. The nine Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) discipline areas (scope, time, cost, quality, risk, procurement, communications, human relations, and integration) are embedded in the course materials in meaningful ways to guarantee high-retention learning. All courses provide rich content delivered through experiential learning. Our "learn it and use it" approach makes it immediately useful back at the office. Courses are:

    • Case based - develop solutions for actual health care problems and project situations
    • Team based - form and participate on teams within the class
    • Interactive - concepts introduced are followed by practial exercises; role-play negotiating and
      conflict management techniques
    • Practical - obtain instructor and fellow student feedback/guidance on your current projects
    • Inclusive - become a member of Project Management Institute

Flexible Program Design

We suggest that you consider taking one or two of the above-described courses and take time to apply what you have learned - then come back for more. UNE will custom design a certificate program (for those interested in taking from three to five courses) based upon your personal or corporate needs.
