B.S. Student in Dental Hygiene
My name is Kristin Center, and I am a senior enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of New England’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland, Maine.
I have already received my associate in science degree from UNE in May 2002. I attended the University full-time for the first degree but have now chosen to complete my B.S. at a slower pace as I am a mother of 11-year old twin girls and am also working as a registered dental hygienist at Dr. David Trussell’s office in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
I am from Freeport, Maine and chose UNE because it’s a reputation for graduating highly respected professionals in the field of dental hygiene. I came to this profession later in my life (28) and wanted a career that allowed schedule flexibility as well as personal gratification. I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to work closely with people and in the health field. I had a friend who was a dental hygienist and loved its rewards. I knew it could be a lucrative career and the schedule flexibility appealed to me.
I feel that the University of New England fosters a feeling of “welcome” to students of all ages. I felt comfortable at every level of my education searching information I needed.
The financial aid was integral in my choosing this school as I was a single-mother and would not be able to work during my schooling. The application process went smoothly, and I was accepted and began my journey within three weeks of acceptance.
The professors here in the Dental Hygiene Program are so wonderful. They are friendly and warm and caring. They worked hard to not only make us the best hygienists but more than that - great professionals.
I believe that the wide variety of patients seen in the Dental Hygiene Clinic prepared me well to understand a diverse range of oral problems, social hurdles, language barriers and financial difficulties preventing people from receiving oral health care. The clinic sees many people from many walks of life, and I believe it helps prepare students for many situations that may arise once they graduate and are working with the general public.
I have been working at the office of Dr. David Trussell since September 2002 and love my career. I meet wonderful people every day who thank me for taking care of them, I am afforded the time to spend with my daughters and I earn a wage that I am proud of. Dental Hygiene has been good to me and I look forward to a long, rewarding career.
