Dental Hygiene Major
My name is Leanne Doughty, and I graduated from the University of New England in May 2003 with an associate's degree in dental hygiene.
In the fall of 2000, I transferred to UNE from a relatively large out-of-state university unhappy with my grades, extracurricular activities, and classes. I knew I wanted to be involved in the dental profession, and decided to enter the dental hygiene program at UNE.
When I first came to UNE I was very apprehensive, because it was a much smaller university than where I had previously attended. I was also living at home with my parents again in Westbrook, Maine. Since UNE has a relatively small campus, it made it very easy for me to get involved. I joined Student Government my sophomore year and currently hold the office of president.
I have attended various dental conferences and traveled to places I never thought I would. I am able to work at a dental office because all that I have learned at school. The program at UNE is awesome; I don't think I can say enough good things about it.
I have made so many great friends, in addition to sharing the opportunity to work with a great staff. The faculty and clinical experiences have without a doubt been the most important contributors. I have felt completely prepared with the curriculum and look forward to working as a dental hygienist soon. If I were ever given the opportunity to do it all over again, there is not a single aspect I would change.
I love my chosen career and am currently applying to dental school, all because of my experiences at the University of New England.
