The University of New England, a recognized leader in the preparation of health care professionals, offers a continuum of nursing programs accredited by the National League for Nursing. The Department of Nursing and Health Services Management's nursing education program enables students to select a curriculum that meets their needs. The program is located at the Westbrook College Campus in Portland, Maine.
UNE's 2 + 2 nursing education model was developed to address the needs of both traditional and non-traditional students. There are opportunities to enter the program at multiple points depending upon prior education and experience:
| • | Students can enter the program in the first year and earn an associate degree at the end of the second year. After passing the licensing exam students can begin working as a registered nurse (RN) and at the same time continue their education as they pursue a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). |
| • | RN's who have graduated from an associate degree or diploma program may return to school to continue their professional development at the beginning of the third year. Successful completion of the third and fourth years earns the student a BSN. |
| • | The first two years of the 2 + 2 program are offered in an evening option. |
| • | The year 3 and year 4 baccalaureate-level nursing courses are held one day a week to make scheduling easier for the working nurse. Many students have found that the ability to continue employment in their chosen profession while enrolled in the BSN program enhances the learning experience and helps to offset the cost of education. |
| • | Evening classes begin at 5 p.m. and clinical experiences begin at 3 p.m. |
The nursing faculty provides a supportive environment for the students at all levels:
| • | This dedicated team of professionals is comprised of nurses who have had a variety of professional and educational experiences. |
| • | The low student-faculty ratio is a distinctive aspect of our program and enhances the ability of our exceptionally qualified faculty to cultivate both the professional and personal growth of students. |
Nursing students also have opportunities to interact with the College of Health Professions seven other programs of study through the College’s dynamic, innovative I2H2 model of health professions education. The I2H2 model - integrated, interdisciplinary health and healing education, training, research and practice - is a multi-faceted approach for preparing health professionals to work collaboratively as members of health care teams to promote the best possible care and health outcomes for their clients and patients.
High-Tech Patient Simulators
The Clinical Simulation Program at UNE uses ‘high fidelity’ patient simulators placed in realistic clinical settings such as patient exam, trauma and operating rooms to produce a real-life environment. This process allows health professions students to be totally immersed in a patient care scenario where they can safely practice and build upon their clinical skills.
