Residency in Internal Medicine, 1978. Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease, 1980.
Experience: Dr. Handler is Board Certified in internal medicine and the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He practiced consultative and invasive cardiology from 1980-1998. He has been a faculty member of the UNE PA Program since 1999. Brenda Beckett

Experience: Brenda has worked in pediatrics in York, Maine since graduating from the UNE PA Program in 2004. She previously had many years experience working as a Medical Technologist in various area hospitals. Prior to joining the faculty, she served on the admissions committee, and as adjunct faculty. She has also served as a mentor to future PA students. You may see her knitting in her spare time. She enjoys sea kayaking and scuba diving with her husband. |

Education: MSPA UNE PA Program 1998
Experience: After becoming the first graduate of the UNE PA Program, Mr. Beneck worked in Family Practice for a year before accepting a Hospitalist position which he has held since. Before pursuing the PA profession, he worked for 3 years as an acute care Respiratory Therapist in Charlotte, NC.
Prior to joining the faculty, John served on the admissions committee as well as adjunct faculty. He continues to mentor students and provides clinical preceptorships.
He enjoys dabbling in a variety of activities involving the accumulation of sawdust, the disassembly of complex devices, and the participation in most outdoor sports.

She loves stomping around Maine with her husband and her two sons. |

Clinical Experience: Mr. Enking as specialized in behavioral medicine since 1987. Areas of practice include geriatrics, addictions, PTSD and chronic mental illness. He currently provides consultation services to correctional facilities. He is the PA AHEC clinical coordinator for the State of Maine. |

Experience: Mr. Toney has served on the University of New England (UNE) faculty since 1996 as an Assistant Professor, teaching interdisciplinary courses in Clinical Medicine and Health Policy to a variety of health professions students. Since 2000, Mr. Toney has also held the administrative position of Coordinator of Community Projects within the College of Health Professions, where he directs the UNE Center for Transcultural Health.Mr. Toney practiced clinically in Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. He also has experience in the areas of health policy & planning serving as a: Consultant to the National Health Service Corps; Health Manpower specialist for the Georgia State Office of Rural Health; 1993 U.S. Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellow; and Director of the Office on AIDS & Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention, Maine Centers for Disease Control; Past President (2001-02), Association of Clinicians for the Underserved.Mr. Toney has received numerous awards including the: Richard J. Sheele Memorial Award, Duke University (1979); and the Robert J. Lapham Outstanding Service Award, Downeast Association of PAs (1998). For his outstanding contributions to in helping to bring primary care to medically underserved communities, Mr. Toney was featured in Big Doctoring in America – Profiles in Primary Care by Fitzhugh Mullan, M.D., Univ. of CA Press (2002). |

Experience: Melissa began working clinically with a General Surgery practice in Portland following graduation from UNE. During that time she remained actively involved with the program, serving as an admissions committee member, clinical preceptor, and adjunct lecturer. In addition to her current position with the PA program, she continues to work full-time, practicing inpatient Adult Internal Medicine. A born-and-raised Portland girl, Melissa loves living in town. She enjoys good food, good coffee, and brisk walks around Back Cove. She also remains a lover of Classics, frequently taking in ancient art/architecture exhibits and keeping up on her Latin. |

Experience: With a background in Business Adm and Psychology, Joe has focused his past 27 years in Gerontology, concentrating on Community, Spirituality, Healing and Complementary ideas about Aging Wisely.
He has acquired the taste for more knowledge and Wisdom and Fun.
He was educated in Philadelphia at both Drexel and Temple Universities, following up with extra courses in Gerontolgy at University of Southern Maine.
His Passion is living Life full of wide-eye “AHA!” experiences and being a Listener to the stories of people. |
