Accreditation

UNE is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The Physician Assistant Program at UNE was designed according to the Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Physician Assistant. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The PA Program last received continuing accreditation in January of 2004. It's accreditation review is next scheduled for 2008.

Laws and Certification

State regulation or licensure of physician assistants, whether specified by statute or regulations, is usually handled in one of two ways. An individual PA may apply for state approval once the state's minimum qualifications have been met. In general, these qualifications include graduation from a nationally accredited PA educational program, as well as satisfactory performance on the National Certifying exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) publishes a booklet entitled PA State Laws and Regulations which indicates the specifics of each state's legal requirements for employment of PA's.
