Patient Simulators and Standardized Patients
Simply put, Human Patient Simulation is changing the way our students learn to save lives.
Human Patient Simulators
Many recent research studies and news stories have demonstrated the value of using Human Patient Simulators (HPS) for healthcare education. The simulators to be housed in the new PEEC are some of the most high-tech in the entire region.
Computer-model-driven, full-sized mannequins, these simulators deliver learning experiences in true-to-life scenarios that swiftly change to meet instructors’ goals. The ultra sophisticated and highly versatile HPS blinks, speaks and breathes, has a heartbeat and a pulse, and accurately mirrors human responses to such procedures as CPR, intravenous medication, intubation and catheterization.
Add to this a profound array of intricately programmed systems such as cardiovascular, pulmonary and pharmacological, to name a few, and you have a closely controlled teaching laboratory where students can practice again and again, until the highest-quality patient care becomes second nature.
Standardized Patients
In addition to the patient simulators, an important function of the PEEC will be the use of standardized patients. These trained actors or volunteers ("patients") mimic various health conditions and respond to questions from students with appropriate answers while reacting appropriately to physical examination maneuvers. The standardized patients are used to both teach and test students at key points in their education – improving and honing their “bedside manners,” interviewing and diagnostic skills.
Evaluation
Also a viital part of the PEEC is evaluation. While in a clinical patient care scenario, or in a nearby classroom viewing a DVD recording of the scenario they’ve just completed, faculty can work with students to discuss care options, or ways to improve skills.
Research
The perfect setting for studies to improve patient safety and decrease errors - the PEEC is also planned as a center for research to be conducted in collaboration with area professionals.
