The University of New England's Physical Therapy Program at the Westbrook College Campus in Portland, Maine, began enrolling students in its new Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum in fall 2004.

Physical therapy education is in a rapid state of transition. Although entry into the profession today requires a master's degree, the vision statement of the American Physical Therapy Association states that by the year 2020, "physical therapy will be provided by physical therapists who are Doctors of Physical Therapy…." Most of the physical therapist education programs in the country have completed or are in the process of preparing for the transition to the DPT entry-level degree.

UNE's Program
The University of New England's DPT program offers students an outstanding accredited, entry-level professional doctorate program within a department that has earned a national reputation of excellence since its founding in 1980.

The department takes pride in its friendly, student-oriented personal approach, which is reflected in a small student-to-faculty ratio. Faculty members are accessible, and people at this small university on the coast of southern Maine know each other's names.

The DPT program is three calendar years (8 semesters) in length and includes a combination of classroom course work, laboratory experiences, and clinical practicum experiences.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education*.

DPT students also interact with students from the College of Health Professions’ six other programs of study at our Portland campus through the College’s integrated, interdisciplinary, health, and healing (I2H2) initiative, which emphasizes an integrated, interdisciplinary perspective on health and healing to promote the best possible care and health outcomes for clients and patients.
