Tradition of Academic Excellence

The UNE Physical Therapy Program has had  continuous accreditation and a reputation for excellence in physical therapy education since graduating its first class for entry into the profession in 1984.
 
UNE, through its College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Health Professions, educates more Maine students and practitioners in the health and healing professions than any other institution (the College of Health Professions includes programs in Dental Hygiene, Nursing (ADN and BSN), Nurse Anesthesia, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, and Social Work).

36 weeks clinical experience available at 270 clinical sites throughout the United States. The sites represent the continuum of health care practice settings including acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient private practices, ambulatory care centers, skilled nursing facilities, school/ preschool programs, and home health care.
   
Opportunities for interdisciplinary and specialty electives. Curricular flexibility that allows students the ability to individually focus on specialized areas of interest.
 
Opportunities for clinical research. A research track is available for those students wishing to conduct research under the mentorship of specific faculty.
 
Opportunities for teaching or research assistantships.
 
Opportunities for part-time study for some components of the DPT curriculum.
 
A full range of outstanding student support services, including counseling, learning assistance, office for students with disabilities, state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories with Window's- based and Macintosh computers, library services (e.g. mediated online literature searches, e-books, e-journals, and e-newspapers, data jacks and wireless access for individual laptops, individual and course related library research instruction).

Outstanding Faculty and Professional Mentors

The DPT faculty is a dedicated group of more than a dozen scholars and clinicians who are entirely committed to entry-level physical therapy education. Most faculty members hold doctoral degrees; many hold advanced clinical certifications representing a variety specialty training areas. Additional highly qualified faculty members teach in the post-professional DPT program.

 
 The PT faculty have an established record of scholarship, professional service, and clinical practice, as well as effective teaching skills, as evidence by students and peer evaluations.
 
Physicians and scientists from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Greater Portland medical community teach gross anatomy, neuroscience, and the five-course pathology and medical management sequence.
 
A wealth of clinical resources - experienced physical therapists, physicians, and other health care practitioners from the greater Portland medical community provide additional lecture and laboratory support in the DPT program.


Facilities
The University of New England's Doctor of Physical Therapy Program uses state-of-the-art educational resources, including technology-equipped lecture rooms and a variety of clinical simulation teaching laboratories.   An onsite academic health clinic, at which students will apply concepts learned in the classroom, is scheduled to be established in the near future.
