Presque Isle Satellite M.S.W. Program

The University of New England’s School of Social Work offers the Master’s of Social Work Program to residents of northern Maine through its satellite site at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Although many of the students enrolled at the site come to the program already employed in the field of social work, the opportunity to enroll in the UNE master’s degree program provides them with a higher level of competency, which will allow them to move into supervisory roles, to do community development work in the northern region of the state or for some, to open their own counseling practices. The M.S.W. degree is required for higher levels of licensure in the state of Maine.

Master’s level courses in research and policy expand participants’ knowledge base in the field and allow them to think about issues their clients deal with on a much higher level. The program emphasizes working through legislative and community processes to achieve policy level changes and provides students with the skills and knowledge to evaluate the effectiveness of agencies and treatment methods

In addition, students are able to undertake the internship segment of the program in local agencies. This training provides students with hands on practice experience in the field, under the direction of master’s-level practitioners.

Evening and On-Line Classes

To accommodate working students schedules, courses are held in the evenings and on Saturdays. Students can also take on-line courses from UNE’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland, the home base of the Master’s in Social Work Program.

B.S.W. graduates from University of Maine Presque Isle or other accredited BSW programs are eligible to apply for “advanced standing,” which significantly decreases the number of credits required for graduation from the master’s program.
