To help improve the overall health of an expanding culturally and ethnically diverse population throughout Maine and Northern New England, the University of New England has launched The Center for Transcultural Health.

As we begin a new century, Maine continues to retain its historical legacy as a large predominately rural state, with a small population totaling approximately 1.65 million.

However, with the influx of economic/political immigrants and refugees from Southeast Asia, Sub-Sahara Africa, Middle and Eastern Europe and Central America, Maine is rapidly evolving into a multiethnic/multicultural society.

These changes in our state require a collaborative approach to meeting the following challenges:

Recognizing or understanding the health care and/or social issues, needs and cultural framework(s) of the individuals and communities they are attempting to serve.

Developing appropriate interactive and language skills to facilitate productive and meaningful communication.

Implementing health care and social service delivery strategies and models, which will promote the enhancement of health care status, while maintaining respect for, and the integrity of, individual and community values and belief systems.

The University of New England Center for Transcultural Health was established to help address the health related issues and desires of all of Maine's residents.
