Transfer Students and Advanced Standing

Transfer Students
Only students in good standing at another school or college of osteopathic medicine are eligible to transfer into the second or third year of the UNECOM curriculum.

Applicants from allopathic, chiropractic, naturopathic, podiatric and other professional health programs may be eligible for advanced standing in many of the basic science classes, but are not considered transfer students. More information about advanced standing can be found below.

Osteopathic students in good standing at another school or college of osteopathic medicine applying to UNECOM as a transfer student must provide the following:

  • Letter of application, making clear the reason for the requested transfer.
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended.
  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores.
  • Letter of support from the dean of the osteopathic school or college in which the student is enrolled, stating that the student is in satisfactory standing.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members at the osteopathic school or college where the student is currently enrolled.

Acceptance of a transfer student from another osteopathic school or college will be dependent upon the student's qualifications, academic compatibility, and available space. Transfer requests are to be sent directly to the UNECOM Academic Dean, not to AACOMAS or the UNE Admissions Office, at University of New England, 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine 04005.

Advanced Standing Credit
Candidates with extraordinary credentials in the basic sciences, often from another professional or master's degree, may be eligible for advanced standing in certain first-year basic science courses. Application for advanced standing can be made after full application and acceptance into UNECOM as a first-year osteopathic medical student. Accepted students may then apply for advanced standing on a course-by-course basis; the department chairperson and course instructor determines criteria and granting of advanced standing. The securing of advance standing does not shorten the four-year curriculum, but may provide for a lighter course load at different points during the first year of osteopathic medical education.
